🔥 Get Toasty: Celebrate National S’mores Day the Survivalist Way
by Author Patricia Annicelli
August 10th, 2025

National S’mores Day is here, and if you’re anything like us at Get Ready and Survive, you know there’s no better way to honor this ooey-gooey holiday than with fire, chocolate, and a little survivalist flair.

Because when the world ends (or when the power’s just out for the weekend), nothing says “we’re going to be okay” like a perfectly toasted marshmallow sandwiched between graham crackers.

🧭 What Are S’mores, Anyway?

If you're new to the campfire scene (or just emerged from your bug-out bunker), s’mores are the ultimate outdoor dessert:

  • 1 toasted marshmallow

  • 2 graham crackers

  • 1 square of chocolate (Hershey’s is classic, but we don’t judge)

Toast the marshmallow over open flame until golden brown or totally charred (your call), sandwich it with chocolate between crackers, and boom—instant morale boost.

🔥 Why S’mores Belong in Your Survival Kit

Let’s be real: s’mores aren’t just a nostalgic treat—they’re a morale weapon.

Here’s why they deserve a spot in your camping gear or go-bag:

1. High-Calorie Punch

When you're burning calories chopping wood or bugging out, you’ll want energy-dense food. S’mores deliver fast carbs and fats in a compact bite.

2. Fire Practice (The Delicious Kind)

Use S’mores Day to teach kids or newbies how to safely build and manage a fire. Who says survival training can't be fun?

3. Mental Boost

Chocolate = serotonin. Marshmallows = smiles. Graham crackers = edible plates. In a survival scenario, comfort food helps morale—and s’mores are edible happiness.

🏕️ Fun Ways to Celebrate

🔥 1. Build a Campfire (or Rocket Stove!)

Got a backyard? Perfect. No space? Use a mini portable stove or even a tea light in a pinch.

🍫 2. S’mores Taste Test

Try alternative ingredients:

  • Peanut butter cups instead of chocolate

  • Cinnamon graham crackers

  • Roasted bananas or bacon strips (yes, bacon!)

🧯 3. Practice Fire Safety

Take 10 minutes to go over how to safely start, contain, and extinguish a fire—because melted chocolate is fun, melted tents are not.

đź’ˇ Survival Hack: Emergency S’mores

Out of marshmallows? Make an “urban s’more”:

  • Spread Nutella and fluff between crackers

  • Use a lighter to briefly heat it (carefully!)

  • Instant sugar bomb for bug-in scenarios

🍫 Final Thoughts

Whether you're deep in the woods or in your backyard with a headlamp and mosquito spray, National S’mores Day is your excuse to have a little fun and brush up on fire-starting and food improvisation skills.

So grab your gear, grab your marshmallows, and remember:
In a world of uncertainty, s’mores are a constant.

Stay sweet, stay safe,
