National Summit Day — August 2: A Call to Prepare and Protect
by Author Patricia Annicelli
August 2nd, 2025

Every year, August 2 marks National Summit Day, a vital reminder for individuals, families, and communities to prioritize readiness and resilience in the face of emergencies. At Get Ready and Survive, we believe preparation is the best defense against unexpected disasters — and this day offers the perfect opportunity to take action.

What is National Summit Day?

National Summit Day was established to bring attention to emergency preparedness nationwide. It encourages everyone — urban, suburban, or rural residents — to review, refresh, and strengthen emergency plans and supplies. From natural disasters like hurricanes and wildfires to unexpected crises like power outages or severe storms, being ready can save lives.

Why August 2?

August is a critical month for emergency preparedness. Many regions face heightened risks from storms, heatwaves, and other hazards. National Summit Day on August 2 reminds us that preparedness is not a one-time task but an ongoing process as seasons and risks change.

How to Get Ready on National Summit Day

Here’s a practical checklist to help you prepare and stay safe:

Emergency Plan Checklist:

  • Identify evacuation routes and safe meeting spots.

  • Ensure every family member knows emergency contacts.

  • Plan for pets and those with special needs.

  • Practice emergency drills regularly.

Emergency Supplies Kit Checklist:

  • At least a 3-day supply of water (1 gallon per person, per day).

  • Non-perishable food items.

  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio.

  • Flashlights and extra batteries.

  • First aid kit.

  • Prescription medications and medical supplies.

  • Personal hygiene items.

  • Copies of important documents (ID, insurance, medical records).

  • Cash in small bills.

  • Cell phone chargers and power banks.
